Tendon and overuse

For soreness that builds with training and doesn't settle with rest, in the knees, shins, heels, shoulders and elbows of athletes who train a lot.

This care is for you if

  • A knee, heel, shin or elbow aches, warms up and aches again after

  • The soreness started when training changed: a new coach, new shoes or a new season

  • Rest helped, and the ache came back when you started again

  • You throw, swim or serve, and your shoulder tires early

What a visit looks like

  • What we do

Your therapist looks at your training load, how you move and how strong each area is, then builds a plan of loading exercises and a practice schedule your coach can follow.

  • What decides how many visits

How long it has been building, how much you train, how the area responds to load and what your sport asks of it. Your therapist talks it through with you at each visit.

  • Who treats you

A physical therapist at every visit. Your first visit is about an hour.

    Meet the team
  • How it is paid for

With your insurance or by paying yourself. We tell you what to expect before your first visit.

    How fees work
  • When to see a doctor first

Tell us right away about a sudden pop, a lump or gap you can feel, swelling that spreads, or numbness. We may ask you to see a physician first.

  • What to bring

The shoes you train in, a note of your weekly training, and any imaging reports from your physician.

  • Chest pain, trouble breathing, a sudden severe headache or pain, new weakness or numbness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or a fall with a head injury needs emergency care now. Call 911.

Questions about this care

Do I have to stop playing?

Not always. Your therapist works out what you can keep doing and what to change for now, and tells your athletic trainer.

Why does it come back when I rest and restart?

Rest quiets a sore tendon without making it stronger. Your plan builds the strength the area needs for the load your sport brings.
